Groaning he slowly opened his eyes as the morning light flashed into his eyes. His head was pounding and he was regretting that last drink he had. His eyes glanced down ever so slightly as he noticed Melissa sleeping soundly on his chest. He let out another low groan as he tried to remember the events of last night. The groaning did not help recall any information but the fact that he was undressed, with a Melissa naked next to him bundled under the covers, helped him put the pieces together.
He slowly a lofted himself out of bed and kissed the top of Melissa's forehead in an almost regretful way. The regretfulness was probably from the fact that as of late his mind had not been fully on Melissa the past few days. He felt like the world’s worst boyfriend at this particular point in his life. This was because his mind had formed to find its way back to the girl he loved before he met Melissa. The girl he convinced himself he was no longer in love with and happily with Melissa now. His heart belonged with Melissa.
However, the moment, Charlotte Rae Breon stepped back into his life old emotions came back to slap him in the face. He tried to deny them; push them back into his head, but it was really no use. He couldn't help it because with Charlotte, he had loved her since the moment he knew what love was, and it never vanished, even when he tried to convince himself he did. Nevertheless, now he knew he needed to get rid of these feelings because he had his first serious girlfriend and things were going "great" or as great as they could be expected. Sure, he wasn't sure if he loved Melissa but she was beautiful, she gave him a good social life, she was a good partier, and she was always there for him in a sense... or well, she hardly let him out of her slight. And, heck... Orion and Melissa were almost the expected couple because he was a football player and she was a cheerleader... it reeked of perfection.
He rummaged through his drawers and grabbed a navy blue shirt, some boxer shorts, and some black pants before taking a quick shower, attempting to wake himself up. When he was all dressed for the day, he was rather in shock that Melissa was still in bed. However, it had been a late night. He figured that he'd let her sleep and the first thought of what to do with himself that rummaged in his mind was the Coffee Shop down the street from his dorms. Coffee was always good for hangovers and it would help wake him up.
He figured it would be the perfect get away to get his thoughts away from Melissa so wouldn't feel so guilty. In addition, he could possible deploy up a plan on how he could get over Charlotte. Besides he was rather pissed off at her right now, considering at how she just walked back into town, and then thinks she has the right to judge his girlfriend and his choices. When she had not even been around to get a good picture of what had been going on! It was making Orion steaming mad just thinking about it....
This did not mean Orion did not want to remain friends with Carly though because she was still very important to him, and he was not about to waste a lifetime of friendship for a dispute. Besides, he hoped that if Carly got to know Melissa she'd realize she wasn't all that bad. However, Carly and Orion... well, they certainly had some talking they had to do.
His next plan of action was simple now really. He had figured it out before even getting coffee, making him rather proud of himself. Step one: Push all feelings for Carly aside, Melissa is perfect for you. Step two: Talk to Carly and try to convince her Melissa is not so bad. Step Three: Hang out with both Carly and Melissa as proof. Three steps… perfectly flawless… Or so he hoped.
--
Finally after getting so memorized in his thoughts he made it into the Coffee shop... and that's when he saw her. Charlotte Rae Braun.

The blaring alarm clock interrupted Charlotte's dream, startling her as she woke. She looked across her room at the sun already streaming in the room and stuffed her head back under her pillow, reaching with her other hand to find the alarm clock. With no luck and a loud crash as she knocked the lamp off the table, she decided morning was as good a time as any to wake up.
She hadn't actually been up in the morning for weeks, or at least since the fight with Orion. It wasn't that she was depressed, although she was sure her aunt thought that. It was more that she didn't feel like going outside. In such a small town, seeing him was practically inevitable. And seeing him meant all the emotions of the fight surfacing, for both of them. Carly couldn't risk making things worse than they were. Not with her best friend who occupied most of her thought.
She slowly raised herself from her bed, feeling the cold hardwood floor with her feet, hoping the lamp wasn't treacherously placed in her path. She was still to groggy to actually open her eyes and have things register. She needed coffee and she knew it. Maybe today would be the day she ventured out. She had gone to work the past few days, but she had shortened her shifts so that she could get back home. She had become quite the hermit in the past week.
After standing and getting used to being awake for a few minutes, she walked through the hall to her bathroom, the one that she and her sister used to share. Her sister then moved to the basement where she not only occupied the bedroom, but the bathroom, main room, and movie room. It was basically like her own apartment. Since it was now only hers, she had let the clutter take over.
After her shower when she was back in her room, she dressed in normal shorts and a t-shirt, towel dried her hair, and sat at her desk to do her makeup. She reached for her hairbrush and the picture of her and Orion caught her eye. Homecoming. She slowly picked it up and examined it. She had worn a white dress with blue accessories. It was a lot more put together than she had ever been. It was a wonderful night and tons of fun until Orion tried to kiss Carly. She had the sudden urge to crumple it in her fist, forget that night and forget Orion.
She resisted that urge and instead just laid it face down on the desk and continued to get ready. When she was done it hardly looked like she was half asleep. She scooted down the hall and down the stairs, skipping the last one as she always did. She grabbed her keys and phone from the small table in front of the door, looked in the mirror above it, and then shouted to her aunt as she left.
As she arrived and parked down the street from the coffee shop, she thought she caught a glimpse of Orion's familiar appearance. After a double take she realized it was just Marcus O'Reily, a current senior. He was probably one of the most annoying people Carly had ever met. Locking her car and reassuring herself that Orion was probably cuddled away in Melissa's arms, she walked along the all to familiar path to the coffee shop. And the first person she saw upon entering the shop was not Marcus, but Orion himself.
Shock crossed her face as she tried to turn immediately around, blocked by the morning work-goers that were ready for their caffeine fill. Breath... breath. She closed her eyes and tried to remember that Orion was her best friend and that it was seriously idiotic to have been avoiding him. She took a deep breath and turned back to face him. "Hi."

His whole body froze as he felt his heart drop to his stomach. The same overwhelming flow of emotions absorbed him just like they had the night she first arrived back in town. Oh how he cursed these boyish emotions of his. He almost wished that he had different type of emotions; those emotions the player men have inside their head, where they only think with their lower regions head, and not the head on top of their body followed along with their heart. Orion felt it would cause less heartache if he only cared about getting girls in the sack. Unfortunately, that was not who he was at all even though some people might have assumed it out of judgment, considering he was rather popular with the ladies, and a football player... even if he had a girlfriend that didn't always stop the rumors. Only the people close to him knew he was not a "playa" at all.
" Hi." he finally breathed out, giving her a lopsided grin. When his thoughts had wanted to speak to her earlier, he had not meant at this moment. He found it rather ironic how "fate" or whatever this could be considered decided to throw him a bone and try to get his plans moving on faster. Orion had really wanted to go to the Coffee shop to dwell over events that had happened recently, and his deep and inner thoughts first before he started talking to Carly. Nevertheless, what was he supposed to do now? Should he claim himself busy and wait to talk to her? Then try to find her later? Or, just take his chance now and talk to her?
Honestly, he knew what needed to be done. He needed to talk to her now because as of late it hadn't been that easy to find her. He felt like she might have been avoiding him but he decided against looking into it too much. Besides, it wasn't like Orion had really wanted to talk to her as of late. He may have been doing some avoiding of his own, and he had been busy with Melissa. It was really just recently that he had calmed down and decided against staying angry at Carly and her judging Orion and his choices. Sometimes he just had to suck up his pride and just try to talk some sense into people... and by people, he meant Carly. This would be because most people were not as important in his life as Carly was. He couldn't imagine living his life without her. He had nearly went insane when she went away after graduation. And, now that she was back in town, he couldn’t just not be her friend… it was insanity!
His lopsided grin faltered now as he realized the importance of everything that had happened as of late. " We need to talk, Carly." he said weakly, as he now attempted even a weak smile. The smile was an attempt to show her he wasn't about to yell at her but they really needed to attempt an "adult" conversation.
This wasn't how he expected his morning to go but it was best to get it out of the way. The sooner he could get his steps into go with his plan, the faster his life would go back to as normal as possible. Which included his best friend being Carly and Melissa being his girlfriend... and everyone living in a " happily peaceful world" once again. ... adjust
He could only hope for so much.
However, he hoped it could be bearably either way.

Carly tried her best to read his expression, the lopsided grin that always meant he was thinking. But she couldn't read it like she used to be able to. Things really had changed so much. Heck, a year ago she would be seeking him out rather than avoiding him. But everything had changed, not just them.
Charlotte knew she had changed just as much as she saw Orion having changed. She still remembered the look on his face when she told him she was going to leave, the look of hurt and confusion and then of course anger. She hadn't thought anything of it at the time but when she came back and he had changed his image, she knew she would lose him. She just didn't want to believe it.
Carly hadn't just come back crushed at her musical failure, but she had turned into more of a city girl than she had been. She used to love to walk everywhere in town, but now she drove most places more than a few blocks. She found it unacceptable to wear the same shirt twice in a row, and she found it perfectly okay to avoid her best friend because of a stupid fight. Yes, she had changed. But as she thought back on it, so had Orion, or at least the public part that Charlotte saw. He wasn't the boy she had met as a toddler. He wasn't the one who would eat dirt and try to talk her out of a dare. He was the one who acted like he had sex every night, maybe even did. The football jock with the cheerleader girlfriend who were stererotypically "destined" for each other. Carly wasn't try to fool herself into thinking things would ever be the same. But she was hopeful, at least.
"I think it best if I have my coffee first," she told him, not denying that they needed to settle things, but trying to delay it further. She had gone a week, who said she couldn't go a few more minutes, even if to gather her bearings? Plus she really was still half asleep and couldn't even tell if Orion was real or a dream version that would end up flying off with Melissa in a hot pink jeep surrounded by flying pigs. She hoped that wasn't the case, because even though what was going on Carly was incredibly happy to see Orion. Even if it wasn't in the most pleasant circumstances.
She ordered a simple caffeinated beverage and moved to sit at the table Orion had been at. It wasn't like they were strangers, she could sit with him, right? She looked down at the table and fiddled with her fingers, wondering if he was gonna start interrogating her as to the origins of her accusations about Melissa. She took a sip of her coffee, burning her mouth slightly. It had been a while since she had tasted the warmth of coffee on her throat. She closed her eyes and remembered all those mornings in high school coming here with her friends, Orion mostly.
So many memories of Orion, she though realizing she didn't really have any other friends. It was really time to make new memories, with new people. If she could get over her best friend. She knew there was a lot to talk about, that would probably start with her leaving. Or maybe even homecoming, although she didn't really want to talk about that. Or leaving. Or any of it in all honesty. She was perfectly fine with kissing and making up without the actually kissing part. Just making up and moving on, even if it meant.... no she wouldn't be okay with losing Orion. In any way.
The last week had been practically unbearable. Knowing that he was playing at the stadium or at a practice or he was walking around town with Melissa made Carly constantly want to cry. And a lot of nights she had. In high school Carly could call Orion with anything, but this wasn't exactly the type of thing she could talk to him about. "I miss you Orion. A lot," she blurted out before thinking about what she was saying. She took another gulp of her coffee and avoided his eyes.

His hands were toasty warm from the coffee he had bought earlier; black and nothing in it making it a bitter taste. It wasn't as if Orion loved the taste of bitterness it was just a taste that easily woke him up in the morning. It was like the immediate touch of the scolding, hot, bitter coffee, touching his lips, slightly burning his tongue, would open his eyes, make him cough a bit, and then prepare for the rest of a possible ' bitter ' day. It was an unusual metaphor to use... bitter days and bitter coffee. It made it sound like his life was crap. This was so far from the truth though. He had his bad days… but he had things that made days’ worth while.
He had a loving mother, a beautiful girlfriend, popular in school, got to play football which he enjoyed dearly and then... there was Carly. She was another great aspect about his life. Although right now it all seemed a bit complicated. He wasn't really certain on what was going on with them. He just hoped he could still claim her a great aspect of his life after today. It had nearly killed him when she left. It had sent him through a whirlwind of emotions at first, from upset, angry, sad, and depressed. Until he eventually accepted the fact, she was gone and he got himself a life again, with a girlfriend.
Besides who was he to be so selfish? Carly had went out to try and chase her dream. But then something went wrong and she came back. He still wondered what exactly happened but before he could even ask hell broke loose. Not that he would have asked because he wouldn't force her to tell him details she didn't want to. But, that was the thing about Carly and Orion they eventually told each other everything within time. He knew it was selfish yet again that he was actually glad her plans had fell through because it brought her back to their hometown, even though her returning still ended up in disaster. He supposed he couldn't have just expected when she returned for her to be ok with his popularity in college and his girlfriend... and that everything would go back to normal, and he'd be able to perfectly balance both Carly and Melissa. He should have known better... but he hadn't. It however, still did not give her the right to judge Melissa the way she did.
He sighed lightly as she blurted out she had missed him. But a genuine smile made its way upon his face. It didn't matter how long they hadn’t talked, or that they were 'fighting' because the truth was Orion had missed her as well. He missed her so much it was killing him. Even when he was out at a party, or doing things to distract his mind, somehow they always ended right back to wondering how Carly was. This was when she left, when she came back, and then after their dispute. It didn't matter, Orion was always missing her, and always wondering about her. No matter, how much he tried to pretend this was not the case; it was... Carly had a part of his heart and probably always would. However, he still felt he could get passed that and be perfectly happy with Melissa.
" I miss you too, Carly" he finally breathed out. " What you said though..." he paused, then stood up, and instead of sitting across from her was now sitting right next to her. Then, he out of nowhere he wrapped his arms around her in a hug because he had been wanting to do that for the longest time. And, at this particular moment, it had not mattered to him what she said. He just wanted his best friend back.
" Carly, we've been best friends since we were little kids, and I don't want to lose you." he expressed, finally pulling away from her, giving an awkward grin. He wasn't sure if hugging her was the right thing to do but... he missed her so much, and it was just a knee-jerk reaction where he couldn't control himself... it happened before he even thought about it.
" We may not agree on each other’s choices but were best friends... and we should be supporting each other regardless." He concluded.

Carly was more shocked by the words than the hug, although both were quite unexpected. She had prepared herself for him being angry, maybe another fight. She hadn't been prepared for him having missed her, for him acting like he was forgiving her. Although she knew this probably wasn't him forgiving her, she knew that things were moving forward not backwards. She couldn't help but smile and hug him back.
And in that moment she didn't want to move on. She didn't want to get passed her feelings and she wanted that moment to last forever. That moment where she had her best friend back and where there was no Melissa. That hug that meant so much more than just being forgiven, it meant moving on and passed everything. She didn't want it to end, but it had to. And when it did, she released him reluctantly and listened to what he had to say.
She realized he was right. She had no right to judge his girlfriend. But there was something about her that Carly just couldn't accept. She had prided herself in being able to read people and get a good judgement of who they were. She had lost some of that since she gone to Nashville. Something about choking on her first big audition that made her lose some confidence. She hadn't talked to Orion about what happened and why she came back. She didn't even know if he wanted to be told, although she liked to think he cared. He was still her best friend, like he said.
"I support you and your choices. I try to anyway. And I know you are happy. I just...." she said trying to put words to her thoughts. How was she supposed to tell him that she was happy that he was happy, and knew he was, but didn't like who he was happy with? Was it because she wanted him to be happy with her? Did she feel threatened by Melissa, jealous even? She just didn't know, and she needed time to figure it out. She couldn't word her thoughts in a way she knew wouldn't upset him so she just said it. "I just don't like you being happy with her. She's not right for you." she sort of mumbled.
She didn't want him to get angry at her again. She knew that whatever she said, if it was about Melissa and wasn't exactly nice would make him angry with her. He loved her and Charlotte could see that. She couldn't help but feel like Melissa was replacing her. She started to wonder why it always took losing someone to realize how much you need them. That's how it always was and would be. She had taken their friendship for granted. She hadn't been the best friend she could be and she was seriously regretting that. And again, she had not reason to judge Melissa. When had she even taken the oppurtunity to get to know the girl? Never. She had met her about twice and both times went home feeling like the girl was a slut. But that didn't mean she could perminently judge her, did it?
And besides, Orion was right. Best friends support each other. Although she was sure it hurt him to see Carly leave, Orion had supported her decision to chase her dreams, hadn't he? He had encouraged it even. But at the same time, shouldn't best friends tell each other when they think the person they are dating is going to hurt them?
She lost her train of thought and went back to drinking her coffee, blaming it on being asleep rather than being nervous. She hadn't seen Orion in a week, that was longer than they had ever been apart. It was unnerving to be apart that long and suddenly come back and see each other unexpectedly. She didn't like that feeling, like she was distancing herself from her best friend and actually felt awkward around him when they met again. It felt wrong. Just as wrong as him being with Melissa. "I'm sorry for avoiding you. I know we needed to talk before this..." she said.
Orion was the only person she would ever apologize to or admit she was wrong to. Anyone else and she would easily have argued her way to being right. But with him, there was always something that mad her not want to argue. Although she sometimes did snap, like last week about Melissa. She was really sorry about everything. Except what she had said about Melissa. Even if it was wrong to judge her, she was completely confident in what she had judged her as.

" Then who do you think is right for me?" he questioned her. He naturally was curious. What Melissa thought meant everything to him. He was honestly a little surprised that the moment she showed dislike in Melissa, that he hadn't just broke up with Melissa. He assumed it was because Carly had been gone for so long. And a part of him couldn't understand her proposition in not liking Melissa when she didn't really know her. If it had been before she left, he might have listened because Carly would have been hanging around enough to get a good feel of Melissa. He wouldn't have just assumed that Carly was hearing rumors and buying into them.
" I just..."
His voice faltered. He didn't understand how she could jump to conclusions on Melissa and him. Carly had been away for the whole summer. She had only met Melissa twice. Sure, there were rumors going around town. Rumors about Melissa cheating on Orion, the rumors that she whored around, they were just stupid rumors. Orion and Melissa had talked about them all before. They were all a bunch of bullocks and Orion believed Melissa when she said she would never betray him. That was all he could do was believe her because what was a relationship without trust?
" I don't understand Carly. I just... I just can't. You don't really know Melissa. Meeting her twice and judging her is just... it's not right." he told her, as a frown etched its way onto his face. His voice didn't sound angry because he was past being angry with her. Instead, his voice dripped of disappointment. He was disappointed that his best friend whom he trusted with everything couldn't like his girlfriend. He was disappointed that she couldn't even give Melissa a real shot. " I think if you just gave her a chance you would see you two would be great friends."
He paused for only a moment, as he reached out and grabbed her hand in a friendly way. " Please, Carly? For me? Will you just try to give her a chance?" he then gave her a lopsided grin, " Then if you still insist on not liking her I'll be able to accept it a lot more then I am right now." he finished with, as he pulled his hand away, to take a sip of his bitterness, tasting coffee.
He then gave her a weak smile, and shrugged his shoulders, ever so lightly. " It's ok." he stated simply. Answers came clear now when she mentioned she was avoiding him. He had found it rather peculiar that in such a small town he hadn't seen her around much. Usually everyone was always bumping into each other. Orion was almost curious as to why he bothered to stay in such a small town because everyone was always in everyone's business.
However, at the end of the day he didn't mind the town all that much. There was always something homey about a place you were born and raised in. The comfort of knowing his mother was only a few blocks away, or that he knew what places served a good meal, that he knew he'd never be lost, and that at the end of the day, he had people here that really loved and cared for him, and those were things that kept him here.
That and... even though Carly left he knew staying here she would somehow always find her way back like she did yet again... and, he'd forever be able to see his best friend again. For even if it was months on end without seeing her face there was always a splash of hope she'd come home again... even if it was just for a while.
However, he always hoped it was for a lifetime.

Carly smiled. She didn't know who was right for Orion. Parts of her wished she knew and could play match maker and find someone he could be happy with while still being best friends with Carly. It was a difficult person to find, someone who was perfectly find with their boyfriend's best friend being a girl. It wasn't always something people liked.
"When have I ever known who is right for you?" she said remembering when she used to try and guess who he liked or who he would end up with. She never guessed right. But she could always guess who the bad girls were, who the sluts were. Always. "I've always been able to guess who's wrong for you though," she pointed out. She just wanted to make sure he knew that he should trust her. She really didn't understand why he wouldn't trust her on this. He always had before and if this were going on before Carly left he would have dumped the girl. She supposed it was because she left that all this was happening. Another reason she wasn't going anywhere ever again.
For whatever reason, his next statement completely angered her. To think he would want Carly to change everything she thought just so he could date someone who is wrong for him. It was outragious that he would actuallly suggest it. Didn't he know it was pointless to try and change Charlotte's mind? She wasn't going to change her mind about Melissa, no matter how much she knew it was wrong to make that judgement. Even if it was wrong to make the judgement, she knew she had made the right one. She wasn't going to just let go and be friends with her.
But before she could lash out at him again she calmed herself down. It was true that she should support him. If not because she wanted to, she had to try for Orion. It was his girlfriend. She should at least try when she's around him, shouldn't she? "Well I suppose I can try although I'll probably give a half-assed attempt." she told him honestly. She was going into it with an idea of who Melissa was, which was never a good thing. Having an open mind was key in accepting people she didn't like, but Carly doesn't have an open mind at all.
"And I know you don't understand and I know it's stupid to judge her when I haven't met her but you don't see her the way I do. You just see what you want, not what's actually there." she told him. It was true, of course. She wanted to make it clear that she knew what she was doing was stupid, because it was. Judging people on first impressions was the very thing Carly was always taught not to do, the very thing she almost always did when it came to Orion's girlfriends. But she also wanted to make sure Orion saw that he was blinded by his love for her, something that seemed to happen a lot in this town. "If you weren't together, you would see her as a slut." she stated, not stopping when she knew this would hurt him. She didn't like hurting Orion, but it had to be done if she was going to protect him. And this was all to protect him, right? She just hoped he saw it as that and not another attack.
She looked down at her hands again, not wanting to see his reaction to her calling Melissa a slut again. It wasn't something she was trying to avoid, but she hadn't been planning on doing this again. It just sort of slipped out and she knew she would regret saying it again. Charlotte tried to think of a time that she actually liked Orion's girlfriend. She couldn't think of a single one that she liked. Whether it be because she thought they were sluts or nerds or just plain weird, Charlotte always found some fault in Orion's girlfriends. And Orion had generally always gone to Carly for an opinion and trusted what she told him. But this time was different. He must really like her, she thought. The thought of him being in love with Melissa almost made her want to burst into tears. She didn't, of course. It was just she didn't want to see Orion get hurt. Ever.

He fell back into his seat now as a frown etched upon his face. "Maybe, nobody is right for me," a shrug of his shoulders indicated defeat. It could most certainly be true. He knew everyone had those sayings 'everyone has a soul mate’ but could that really be the truth? What about all of those people that did die alone? What about the people that claimed to have found their soul mates and then shortly after their love dies. Maybe Orion's 'soul mate' already died and he had no hope. Maybe, Melissa was going to be the closest thing he could come by when it came to having a soul mate. Everyone thought it was a perfect match. The football player with the Cheerleader. Everyone except Carly; his best friend.
Truthfully, Orion may just be destined to be alone forever. If Melissa really was his soul mate then his immediate attention should always be focused on her. Why shouldn't it be? She was a cheerleader, funny, had an amazing smile and she was a lot of men's idea woman. Except there was only one flaw with Melissa in Orion's eyes... She was not Carly. What kind of flaw was that even? She’s not your best friend? Orion hated himself for thinking that. He hated that he couldn't just find himself in complete, undying love with Melissa. He hated that he was so in love with his best friend even though he would never be able to be with her. He knew how pathetic he was... he knew how lame it was that he had been in love with her since he was a young kid.
This was why he assumed he didn't have a soul mate. He was meant to be one of those guys that just dated a few girls here nor there, or took what he got and made the best out of it... which was being with Melissa. Because at the end of the day, he didn't have the "perfect" girl for him, his perfect girl was nonexistent. And, if she existed he assumed as soon as he met her all feelings for Carly would disappeared. He just couldn't ever see that happening.
Orion had been about to thank her for at least giving somewhat of an effort at pleasing him when it came to his girlfriend. However, her next few statements sent him on a slight edge. He just couldn't believe how she was acting! Here he was trying to have a decent conversation with her and try to mend their friendship and she was doing everything in her power to destroy it again. She couldn't even try to be nice. She couldn't even give a little to try and keep Orion happy. He was trying his best to be good about this but it just wasn't working.
"Carly!" he shook his head at her, stood up, grabbing his coffee, a look of displeasement on his face, as he tried to keep his cool. "Do you even want this friendship to last!?" he questioned her, trying to stop the look of agony playing across his face but it was no use. His voice was not screeching at her, it was actually rather calm, because he didn't want to start a huge blowout like last time. It was just he needed to know. He needed to know if he was just sitting here wasting his time trying to mend a friendship that might have done its last race.
It killed him inside but how was he supposed to view this? She wasn't even trying. It was a simple task. To just support him in his choice to date Melissa. If Carly was right about Melissa then it would be Orion's mistake not Carly's. He just couldn't believe she wasn't even really willing to try to be decent about his girlfriend. She could think what she wanted but she didn't need to be so low about Melissa in front of Orion.
He really hoped he wasn't about to lose his best friend... not over a girl. However, he couldn't choose between Carly and Melissa. He wanted them both in his life and he really hoped Carly wasn't going to make him do such a thing. If it had been, Melissa making him choose he would have automatically broken up with her to keep Carly in his life. But, this was different... what was he supposed to do when it was his best friend trying to make him choose?
He knew he had broken up with girls before because Carly didn't like them. However, this was different? Carly hadn't been around! She couldn't possibly be getting the accurate description on Melissa. Or, could she?
Oh god…
He hoped they could figure this out. He didn’t want to lose Carly.

At this point it took every part of her not to cry or start yelling at Orion. She was trying harder than she had every tried before. Or at least she thought she was. But was she really trying at all? She guessed that a part of her knew it was pointless and didn't even want to try. After all, she hadn't even tried to like Melissa, she just chose to ignore the fact that Orion liked her. Carly knew Orion wasn't the worst judge of character, so there must be something good in Melissa, right? But she just wasn't giving the girl a chance and she didn't know why.
Usually when she was around one of Orion's girlfriends she was slightly uncomfortable. She generally blamed that on being a third wheel, but sometimes she just knew it was different, that the girl was wrong. And this was one of those times magnified be ten. She just felt angry around Melissa and Orion together. The few times she had been with the couple she felt as if she would burst, whether in a fit of tears or screams she wasn't ever sure. Melissa had a wonderful effect on Orion to the point where he was incredibly happy, a reaction Carly wasn't sure she ever got out of Orion. She was jealous, sure. She always used to be so happy around Orion no matter what was going on otherwise, but she was never sure if he felt that around her.
"I'm trying Orion, trust me, I'm trying." she said, trying to keep her voice even although it still shook. She was still trying to convince herself that she really was trying. She was still unsure if she was giving a genuine effort or if she had just given up on liking Melissa. She was guessing the later. She stood up next to him, looking straight at him for the first time since the last fight. "But you know me better than to ask me to change my mind on this. This is the one choice I will never support." She said, raising her voice slightly but still trying not to get as angry as she felt. "I'm not going to fight your decision to party around with a slut, but don't come crying to me when she breaks your heart. You know I've never been one for sutlety so here's my question." She wasn't doing a very good job of staying calm.
She didn't really know where she was going with this. Part of her wanted him to make the choice, Carly or Melissa. She knew that would be terrible of her and he would never forgive her if he actually did love Melissa. But Charlotte really had to know if Orion was still the boy who captured her heart all those years ago, the one who was always a shoulder to cry on and a ear to listen. She needed to know if he was still her best friend or if he had moved on in more ways then just a crush. She needed to know if this was even posisble to mend or if both of their efforts were pointless. She needed to know.
So with a shakey voice and holding back tears, she spoke. "If one of us gave you the choice, made you chose. Who would you keep?" she asked him quietly, now aware that others were watching them. She was practically whispering, not sure if she was actually asking him to make the choice or just seeing what he would say. She sure as hell didn't want to lose him but she thought it was best if she knew as to avoid any more hurt for either of them.
She loved Orion to much to lose him now, but she loved him to much to be hurt by him again. And everything that had gone on in the past week hurt her to much. She didn't know if it could be remedied. But she was willing to try if he just gave her the reasurrance that he still wanted it. Just one word and she would give it her all to try and make everything work. She would even try to like Melissa if he said he would chose Carly. But otherwise, she knew it was a pointless venture. She knew he was lost to her. She prepared herself for the break, figuring that after leaving and all the hurt she put him through, he would be ready to give it a rest and leave. After all, Charlotte had just been bad for him from the beginning, right?

Crack. He swore he could hear his heart just shatter into a million of pieces for many reasons. Why was she doing this to him? She wasn't trying, Orion wasn't blind. She was hardly trying because she couldn't even hold her tongue long enough not to call her a slut. Every time he heard her refer to his girlfriend as a slut it sent a ping to his chest. Could she not see how much she was hurting him? And, if she could see how much she was hurting him why did she insist on continuing with the name calling and the disapproval?
I'm not going to fight your decision to party around with a slut, but don't come crying to me when she breaks your heart. You know I've never been one for sutlety so here's my question. This might have been the line that sent chills down his spine the most. Even if Carly turned out to be right, she wouldn't be there for him in the end of it all? What kind of friend is that? Orion had always been there for her in all of her heartbreaks! It had even been worse on Orion then it would be for Carly. Orion had to sit there while she went on dates with other guys. Other guys he knew would break her heart and he had to just sit and deal with it. The worst part being that he was in love with her. He was her best friend and if he had been given the chance, he would have never hurt her. He would have never done some of the things other guys had done to her. Yet, even with Orion's disapproval to some of her choices he still supported her, he was still her shoulder to cry on. How could she be so cold!?
He shook his head at her. "Nice to know I can't count on my 'best friend'." his voice had an odd twang when he mentioned the word best friend. He knew he always took Carly's advice when it came to almost anything. However, what was he supposed to do? Break up with his girlfriend he had been seeing shortly after Carly left? It was Melissa who had been there with him when his mom was sick, when he lost his football games, when he needed someone to talk to. Sure, it wasn't the same as it was when he was with Carly but it was still someone. He couldn't just dump Melissa because Carly came back to town and felt Melissa was wrong for Orion. That would be wrong on so many levels.
He never thought he would be put in this situation. Where Carly would make him choose between her and another girl. He supposed it was because he automatically broke it off with any other girl he'd ever been with because Carly usually disapproved. He never realized that if he wouldn't because of her it would end up in disaster. It was usually a given that he would when she said ' i don't like them' and now that he wasn't she seemed to not take a liking to that. He just felt like this time was different then all the other times... it just had to be.
"You never approve of who i'm dating Carly. And, at the same time, you don't know who would be right for me? I mean... what? Do you not want me to find a girlfriend or something?" he questioned her, a frown still etched upon his face. Did she want him to be miserable and unhappy? Did she want him to not date anyone because she wanted him all to herself and at her beckon call? He felt that last part was selfish if it was the case because she dated guys before and Orion just had to accept it. Why couldn't she do the same for him.
And then...
She asked the dreaded question. He wasn't sure if she was really asking him to choose or it was in theory. His face turned red as he gaped at her. "I." he paused, stuttering ever so slightly. "That's horrible of you to ask me, Carly." he said shaking his head at her, hurt etched upon his face. "Melissa would never ask me to choose. And, i'd never thought you would be asking me to choose either..." he couldn't contain all of the emotions playing across his face. He felt like he was about to lose it, and break down. Was he about to lose his best friend?
"I" he stumbled again,
"You shouldn't ask me to answer that. But, I love you, Carly. You've been my best friend since we were little kids. I can't imagine you not in my life. And, when you went off to Nashville and left me here it killed me. I wanted you to stay here. But, I never asked you to stay and choose me over your goals. I've been there for you when guys broke your heart. I've been there for you in almost every waking moment of your life. And, here you are asking me who i'd choose!? Carly, how can you even sit there and ask me that?" the hurt and pain showed within his speech, that frown still on his face, as he took a steadying breath to keep himself calm.

Carly sat down at the table, speechless and looking anywhere but Orion. Now look what I've done, she thought. She sure was good at making messes and then making them bigger. He was right of course, everything she was doing was just selfish. Could she not see how much she was hurting him? How stupid it was that she had asked him that question? How stupid this whole thing was? Of course she could see that, but she didn't care. All she cared about was how hurt she was that she wasn't the center of Orion's life once again. And that was more than selfish.
Carly just sat there in silence, not looking at Orion and not speaking or even attempting to say anything. She knew going into this that she was good at ruining things. She wanted this friendship to work, yes, but was she really looking out for Orion when she had this opinion on his girlfriend, or was she just being jealous and selfish? She soon realized the second one was more true, although that lead to wanting to protect Orion. This whole time she was thinking how he hadn't been there for her when she came back from Nashville with broken dreams and a broken heart, but had she ever been there for him? Had she ever been a good enough friend to listen to his problems? No, she had always gone to him with hers but she never returned the favor. I must be the worst friend in the history of the world, she thought.
And then it brought the question, did she really mean what she said about not being there when his heart was broken, if that even turned out to be the end result? Her imediate thought was no, of course she would be there. But then she started to think. She couldn't handle seeing him so broken. He had always been happy and never upset with a breakup, at least not around Carly. She didn't even know how to deal with him so upset, or at least not about a girl. She had been there when his mother was sick, but that was a different kind of comfort that he needed. When it's about a girl, Charlotte wouldn't know if she should feel sad about the girl or happy that she had her best friend back. Jeez, everything she was thinking was selfish! Of course she would be there for him, no matter what.
Now that she had addressed that issue with her statement, she moved on to the next. How could she have asked him to choose? Again, more selfish than anything could have been. After all he's done for her, how could she ask him to chose? Sure, it was just a theoretical choice at this point, but the meaning was still there. Even if it was theoretical it still hurt just as bad. Carly was breaking his heart now more than Melissa was, if Melissa was really what Carly thought. She was sure Melissa was, but she had to take in the possibility that she was just acting on jealousy. But still, Charlotte was breaking Orion's heart and she could see that. Did she care? Of course she cared, she hated seeing him hurt! But did she care enough to stop? Apparently not, as she just kept saying things that tore him apart. What an idiot she was. What kind of a best friend was she? A horrible one!
And that brought her back to why. Why was she doing all this? Why was she being so selfish? Because I want to protect him. she thought. That was part of it, sure. Even through everything, she didn't want to see him hurt by anyone else. Did that mean it was okay for her to hurt him? She certainly had enough before. Just in the past year she had hurt him more than anyone ever had. She was just a bad person for him to be around, she did more damage than she did good. And then was there another reason? Selfishness wasn't a good enough reason for Carly. That was something she was, not a reason for being it. She was jealous of Melissa, sure. After years and years of being the only girl in Orion's life, wasn't it natural to want that again? But why was she so jealous now with this girl? She hadn't been this outraged at a relationship before.
It was something Charlotte couldn't quite answer. And she thought she couldn't answer anything Orion was asking without hurting him more. She she just shook her head and put her head in her hands. She didn't want to hurt him. Obviously she did hurt him when she was talking, no matter what she said it hurt. So she just wouldn't say anything and see where that took them. Even if she could say something with the confidence that it wouldn't hurt him more, she couldn't word her thoughts. She was speechless, in shock that she had actually said those things and that Orion had picked up on how selfish she was being before she had. How could you have done this? she kept thinking to herself as she laid her head in her hands and stayed silent.

Silence. Silence consumed their surroundings as Orion bit down on his lip. His hands were shaking as he took another sip of his coffee. What was he supposed to do at this point? How was he supposed to react to her not speaking? What was she trying to say to him? Was this the end of their friendship? Was this her telling him without words that this was over? Was it because he didn't give a straight up answer on who he would choose? So many questions were flowing through his mind and he didn't know what to do. He didn't know what to think. Should he just leave? Say something to her? Get angry or break down into a fit of tears. He knew that wasn't very manly but how was he supposed to act when he was losing the most important person in his life... his best friend?
This was not part of his plan; his flawless plan to manage both Melissa and Carly. He was hoping that his ideas would work and that Carly and Melissa could be friends. He was hoping that Carly would at least attempt to be nice to Melissa. But, Carly wasn't even trying. He knew he shouldn't have been assuming things would work out well. He knew Carly was stubborn and when Carly had her mind set on something it never really changed. He just had hoped this time would be different. Orion should have known better but he didn't.
He could feel eyes staring at the two interacting. It was like a television show for the people of this small town. Everyone was always trying to figure out what was going on. Orion and Carly were known around town for being the best of friends. Of course, people were interested on what was going on. As he turned his head ever so slightly, he could see people watching in anticipation of what was going to happen. Was Orion going to yell? Was Orion going to leave? Was Orion or Carly going to cry? Was their solid friendship really breaking up? Sometimes he really did hate how nosy this town could be. He just really wanted some privacy but it almost seemed impossible.
As his head turned to look over at Carly, he frowned seeing her head go into her hands. He couldn't figure out what was going through Carly's head and it bothered him. Usually he was able to determine how Carly was feeling, or at least if she was annoyed, upset, sad, but at this moment, he couldn't. She did however look very much defeated. And, he hated seeing her look like this. He set his coffee down on the table as he took a seat across from her, silently staring at her for a few moments, as he tried to figure out what to say. But, the silence consumed the Coffee Shop a lot longer then he intended for it to be.
And then
He finally got up the courage to speak up. "Carly, you have to tell me what you're thinking. This is killing me! I don't want to lose you but I have no idea what you want at this point..." his voice faltered as he spoke. “I.” and there it was again, he was back to losing his voice as he tried to speak.
“I want you in my life but I…” pausing again, “But, I can’t just break up with Melissa, Carly. Not after she was there for me. She was here for me when you weren’t Carly. When I was told my mom had less than six months to live, when I lost my football games, when my dad and me got in a fight… and you weren’t. I can’t just walk away from someone like that because you don’t like them. I just can’t…”he was having a bit of a break down with every word he spoke, “Maybe.. If you won’t have left…things would be different..” and that could honestly be the truth. If she would have stayed Melissa and him wouldn’t have been together for as long as they were. He would have broken up with her the minute Carly told him she didn’t like her, and not took another thought about it. But, Carly left and Melissa was there for him when she wasn’t. He couldn’t blame Carly for leaving but the fact of the matter was… she did, and things changed.
His eyes now closed as he waited for her to speak. Or well, he hoped she would speak…
However, it seemed whatever Orion hoped would happen as of late never did. But, what else did he have left to do other than hope? Without hope there was really nothing left. And, this friendship could be over with a single blink of the eye.

Carly remained silent for a few more moments, trying to word her thoughts and pick out the things she was actually going to tell him. At this point she had no idea how he would react to any of it, so she was completely fine with not telling him all of it. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to tell him any of it. What she could tell was just things she was trying to clarify for herself, and the other things were so jumbled and disorganized that she was still trying to clean up her thoughts and organize in her own mind.
Her head was still in her hands, but she was listening. She wasn't looking at him. She knew that as soon as she did he would be able to see what she was feeling, and if there was one thing she hated more than him being hurt it was him knowing when she was anything but happy. She always felt guilty when he knew she was upset or something when she wasn't positive why because he would try and help and that would mainly be wasting his time because Carly was so stubborn. But somehow he was always able to figure Carly out. Even when she was trying to hide it, he managed to do it. Maybe because he knew her better than anyone. But either way, Carly wasn't sure she even wanted to tell Orion what she was thinking.
So she just listened to everything he was saying. Everything he was saying was right, obviously. But his last statement angered her. “Maybe.. If you won’t have left…things would be different.” If she hadn't have left then things would be different. She thought about it all the time. If she had never left then she and Orion would have never had the fight because he would have immediately broken up with Melissa just because Carly had said so. If she hadn't gone to Nashville she would have gone eventually and this would have happened because singing had been her passion and she had really thought she could do it.
"What if I hadn't gone? What if I hadn't come back for that matter?" she asked him, her anger making it into her voice. If she hadn't come back, what would have happened? She would have stayed and gotten rejected countless more times. Orion and Melissa might have been happy, or they might have broken up and Carly wouldn't have been there to help him. One situation Orion didn't need Carly and the other he did. "What if, what if, what if! The thing is I did go, and I did came back, Orion. And what am I thinking? I'm thinking I should go back to Nashville and try this again because obviously it didn't go well this time." she told him, her voice raising although she was trying to stay calm.
She had never been good at concealing her emotions. She was quick to anger and slow to censor what she said. As was evident in this interaction with her once best friend. She looked around as she tried to think if she should tell him what she was thinking. How she came back and needed a friend when she had failed to achieve her dream, but he hadn't been there for her.
"You know why I came back? I choked on one of my preformances. And I got rejected at every single agency I went to, they told me I wasn't good enough and wouldn't ever be. That might be because I choked on every single audition. Got really nervous because guess what? You've always been in he crowd or right there in front of me whenever I sing and you weren't there. I can't do anything without my best friend there, Orion. I can't do anything without you there." she said, no anger anywhere in her anymore. She was looking right at him, no longer caring if he saw her emotions. He was her best friend still and she wanted that to stay true.
"Everything you've said is true. I'm being more selfish than I probably ever could be. But when I cam back from Nashville with the biggest failure I could have ever imagined, you weren't there for me," she said calmly. "You weren't there for me Orion! You weren't there!" she said, louder and her anger back in her voice. She didn't care what the people around her were thinking or if they were watching. They were starved for gossip and would blow up everything going on with the pair anyway, she might as well give them something that was true.
She pulled her knees up on the chair near her chest and looked back down at her hands, done with her outburst and back to silence. And she waited for Orion's response.

Nobody could change the past. Time turners and time machines did not exist. What happened happened and there was really no changing it. What if questions were always pointless but no matter how pointless they may be, they were always asked. What if Carly hadn't gone? It was already certain he would have broken up with Melissa. What if Carly had stayed? He would have never been with Melissa and he wouldn't be in the situation he was in. He didn't like being in the situation but at the same time he did enjoy Melissa's company. It was nice having a girlfriend. It was nice having Carly as a friend but the truth of the matter was that is all Carly would ever be. At least he was able to cuddle with Melissa, hold her hand, kiss her, and wake up with her by his side. He wasn't able to do any of that with Carly. And, if she wouldn't have left he would still be single and he might end up forever alone, as he watched her go out with other guys and live her life. Because Orion he would never intervene with her and a boyfriend she may have unless he was physically abusing her... he might have to fight a guy if he ever touched her in a way he shouldn't be touching her. Because Orion couldn't just sit there and watch her get hurt.
What was he supposed to say to all of this now? He couldn't have just went to Nashville with her. He couldn't have just dropped his life of college and football to go with Carly. It's not like she asked him to go either. Maybe, if she had, he might have gone with her. However, some things she did need to do on her own. He felt bad but Orion couldn't be with her everywhere. As much as he may have wanted to be, he couldn't have. However, who was he kidding? If she had even suggested he went with her, he probably would have dropped everything and gone. But, in the back of both of their heads, I think they both knew she had needed to go on her own. It wasn’t like he was her boyfriend… he was just her best friend, and best friends come and go, they aren’t the ones that pick up everything and leave with their best friend. It’s the boyfriends and girlfriends that drop everything to be with the one they love. Yes, Orion loved her, but he wasn’t her boyfriend… And, now he was Melissa’s. He did feel guilty that he hadn't been there for her much when she came back. However, it wasn't like she gave him much of a chance to be there for her. When she found out, he was dating someone she just started to shut him out. Then after their fight, she avoided him. And, Orion was never one to push people to tell him things they don’t want to. He figured she would tell him within time why she came back… and of course, like he predicted she did, but not in the way he imagined… not like this.
"I'm sorry." he finally mustered out, after a few more moments of silence.
"But, if you would have come to me, I would have been there for you, Carly. You should know that. But, instead you avoided me and complained about me having a girlfriend. Just because i'm with Melissa doesn't mean i'm not going to be there for you..." he let out a sigh, knowing how true this was because if Carly needed him he would drop everything he was doing to come running to Carly's rescue. He may not in a sense choose Carly flat out but in the reality of it all, he didn't have to say out loud he'd choose Carly over Melissa but he would. If Carly needed him and Melissa needed him he would be there for Carly before he would be there for Melissa. He just had to hope that was never going to happen to him.
That's when his phone buzzed off and he reached in his pocket to grab it. It was a call from Melissa and he frowned slightly and ignored the call. He knew it was rather wrong of him to do. She was probably slightly worried when she woke up and he wasn't there this morning. But, this conversation was more important and was already proof enough that Carly was more important than Melissa was to him. It was already proof enough that if he had to choose between Melissa and Carly it would always be Carly. He just wasn't going to admit that and he wasn't going to say that out loud. But, within Orion's own actions, without even realizing it he was always going to be choosing Carly over Melissa. No matter how much he may tell himself he wouldn't do that... that he wouldn't choose...
It was always Carly.
